Listening A

This parts tests your ability to listen to a conversation and pick up specific details spoken in a range of accents.

There are 2 x 5-minute interview extract between a patient and a healthcare professional. Each extract has 12 question requiring short note answer entry. In the real exam, for each interview, you have 30 seconds to read the questions before the audio starts.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • have a wide, general healthcare and general English vocabulary
  • expect rephrasing of information
  • be able to make notes while listening
  • note signposts (e.g. section headings, language around the black spaces, speaker references) to help you follow along with the audio

Listening B

This part tests your understanding of the wider meaning of language e.g. gist, inference, call-to-action, purpose of communication and more.

There are 6 x 60 – 90-second audios of clinical and non-clinical healthcare conversations. Each audio has a 3-option MCQ and only one answer is correct. In the real exam, for each audio, you have 15 seconds to read the questions before the audio starts, as well as a few seconds’ pause at the end.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • understand a wide range of vocabulary and grammar
  • expect rephrasing of information
  • be able to answer while listening

Listening C

This part also tests your wider understanding of language: gist, inference, call-to-action, opinion & attitude, purpose of communication and more.

There are 2 x 5-7 minute audios of clinical and non-clinical healthcare conversations. Each audio has 6 x  3-option MCQs and only one answer is correct. In the real exam, for each audio, you have 90 seconds to read the questions before the audio starts.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • understand a wide range of vocabulary and grammar
  • expect rephrasing of information
  • be able to answer while listening
  • remain focused for a longer period of time
  • note signposts (e.g. references, indications that topic is changing) to help you keep up with the audio

NOTE for working with the practice tests: if you start an exercise, you must finish it and click “Finish” before you will be allowed to move on to another part.  BUT you can do the practice papers or parts A, B and C in any order you wish.
