HELPFUL TIPS

Reading A

This part lasts exactly 15 minutes and tests your ability to find exact details quickly in different kinds of texts found in the clinical setting.

There are 20 questions divided into 3 sections.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • quickly skim to identify kind of information in each text
  • scan quickly to find exact information without reading every thing in detail
  • have a wide vocabulary and expect rephrasing
  • record information quickly but accurately

 

Reading B & C are presented together, total 45 minutes

Reading B

This part tests your understanding of the wider meaning of language e.g. gist, main point, inference, call-to-action, purpose of communication and more.

There are 6 short texts (about 100 words each) from clinical and non-clinical healthcare situations. Each text has a 3-option MCQ and only one answer is correct.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • have a wide vocabulary and understand wider meaning of vocabulary, grammar and idioms
  • expect rephrasing of information
  • skim and scan quickly to arrive at an answer, without reading every thing in detail

 

Reading C

This part also tests your wider understanding of language e.g. gist, main point, inference, call-to-action, opinion & attitude, purpose of communication and more.

There are 2 longer texts, 800 – 1000 words, on healthcare topics. Each text has 8 x 4-option MCQs and only one answer is correct.

TO DO WELL, YOU SHOULD

  • understand a wide range of vocabulary, grammar and idiom
  • expect rephrasing of information
  • be comfortable reading longer texts

NOTE for working with the practice tests: if you start an exercise, you must finish it and click “Finish” before you will be allowed to move on to another part.  BUT you can do the practice papers or parts A, B and C in any order you wish.
