OET Speaking sample -
Nursing - Warm-Up
The FIRST PART of the OET role play is NOT MARKED. It is to check that the recording and timing equipment work, and lets candidate and interlocutor get accustomed to each other's voices. Candidate: it is a good chance for you to settle into the speaking English and role-play a familiar work scenario.

- 1) introducing yourself to the "patient
- 2) Allowing the patient to introduce the problem
- 3) summarizing points to ensure understanding
- 4) not immediately dismissing patient's concern
- 5) direct and indirect reassuring of patient
- 6) offering advice in simple language a layman could understand.

- 1) introducing yourself to the patient

- 3) summarizing the patient's issues again to show understanding
- 4) guiding the interview by asking specific open questions
- 5) asking fewer simple 'yes' / 'no' questions
- 6) not immediately dismissing patient's opinion of the problem
- 7) offering advice in simple language a layman could understand 8) making indirect suggestions instead of giving directions or instructions e.g. about changing lifestyle.

- 1) introducing yourself to the patient
- 2) allowing the patient to introduce the problem
- 3) using simple as well as more complex grammar in discussing details of the problem (e.g. "How long have you been having these problems?" )
- 4) showing an understanding of all essential clinical points on the role-play card ("I see here that you are a diabetic.")
- 5) guiding the interview by asking more open questions and asking fewer simple 'yes' / 'no' questions
- 6) showing understanding of the patient's point of view
- 7) using emphatic language when called for ("and this is really serious")
- 8) politely posing more personal, sensitive questions (here, about lifestyle).

- 1) introducing self in a friendly but professional manner;
- 2) starting with open-ended questions to allow the patient to introduce the topic herself;
- 3) Asking if there are any further issues the patient would like to address;
- 4) correcting wrong information and re-educating the patient without being judgmental;
- 5) repeating and emphasizing important points;
- 6) using a fairly wide range of vocabulary and grammar. Note a) the candidate has a distinct accent but this does not prevent him from being understood; b) there are some grammar errors and mild mispronunciation, but not enough to distract from his meaning or cause misunderstanding or confusion.
